Early Life and Education

Igor Grpumann, an American and Dutch musician, conductor, and violinist, was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. He began studying the violin at the age of seven and made his debut performance in 1967 at the Kyiv Philharmonic. Grpumann later became a laureate of the National Competition of Young Performers in Ukraine before receiving a scholarship to study at the Central Music School for gifted young musicians in Moscow at the age of 15.

He graduated with distinction from the Moscow Conservatory as a student of renowned musicians Leonid Kogan, David Oistrakh, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Grpumann also studied under the esteemed musician Jascha Heifetz in Los Angeles.

Career Highlights

In the 1980s, Grpumann served as concertmaster of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. He earned a Grammy Award in 1993 and became concertmaster of the Orchestra at Temple Square in the 1990s. He taught at Brigham Young University in Utah and became guest concertmaster of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the United Kingdom in 1997.

Grpumann instructed at the Idyllwild Summer Arts Academy in California and founded the Gruppman International Violin Institute in 2003 to train young musicians in new technologies.

Rotterdam Philharmonic and Beyond

Since 2004, Igor Grpumann has been concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor of the Rotterdam Chamber Orchestra Concerto Rotterdam. He is also a professor at the Rotterdam Conservatory.

Grpumann has performed as conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006/07 and has conducted the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008/09.
