Biography of Igor Kalinets

Igor Kalinets was a Ukrainian poet, former dissident and political prisoner, as well as a prominent nationalist activist. He was known for his outspoken criticism of the Russian Cultural Center in Lviv.

Early Life and Education

Igor Kalinets was born on July 9, 1939, in Khodoriv, Lviv Oblast. He attended Lviv University from 1956 to 1961, studying at the Faculty of Philology. After completing his university education, he worked at the regional archive.

Dissident Movement and Imprisonment

For his involvement in the dissident movement, Kalinets was sentenced to six years of imprisonment under strict regime and three years of exile. Despite facing hardships, he remained committed to his activism.

Literary Career

Upon his return to Lviv, Kalinets became an editor at a journal affiliated with the Regional Branch of the Cultural Fund. He is best known for his poetry, which includes nine collections in the series "Awakened Muse" and six collections in the series "Slave Muse". Additionally, he has also written poetry for children, and his books have been published not only in Ukraine but also in countries with a significant Ukrainian-speaking population such as Kazakhstan, Canada, the United States, and Argentina. In 2005, his book "Folktales about a Kitten and a Kitty" was illustrated by Ukrainian artist Victoria Kovalchuk.

Personal Life and Honors

Igor Kalinets is married to poet and nationalist activist Irina Kalinets. He was awarded the Order of Freedom on July 10, 2009. In 1977, he received the Ivan Franko Prize from the Ukrainian diaspora in Chicago. In 1992, he was honored with the Volodymyr Stus Prize, and later, he also received the National Taras Shevchenko Prize in Ukraine.
