Biography of Igor Roslyakov

Igor Roslyakov, also known as Father Vasily, was a monk of the Russian Orthodox Church and a poet. His earthly life was cut short at the age of 32 when he, along with two other monks, was killed in Optina Pustyn Monastery on Easter. Today, Igor would be considered charismatic, as he had a magnetic presence that attracted attention wherever he went. He was tall, standing at almost six and a half feet, with thick wheat-colored hair.

From a young age, Igor was dedicated to water polo and became one of the best players in Europe. He studied journalism at Moscow State University and played for the university's water polo team, which was one of the strongest in the Soviet Union at the time. Despite his success in sports, Igor's spiritual journey began during his university years when he became acquainted with Tamara Chermenskaya, a deeply religious professor. Through her, Igor started attending church and reading the Bible.

At the age of 27, Igor arrived at Optina Pustyn Monastery and took on the name Vasily after his tonsure as a monk. Father Vasily had a profound impact on those around him, leading many of his acquaintances from his previous life to find their way to God. He was known for his humility and never judged others, even when they criticized him. His gentle and calm demeanor touched the hearts of many.

Tragically, on Easter Sunday in 1993, Father Vasily, along with two other monks, was brutally killed in the monastery. The details of the incident remain a mystery, and the murderer, Nikolai Averin, was found to be mentally unfit for trial. Despite this tragedy, Father Vasily's memory lives on, and many people visit his grave in Optina Pustyn Monastery, where miracles have been reported to occur.

In recent years, Father Vasily's mother, Anna Mikhailovna, also known as Mother Vasilisa, became a nun, continuing her son's spiritual legacy. The life and death of Father Vasily serve as a reminder of the dedication and faith of those who choose to follow the path of God.
