Luigi Giussani, an Italian Catholic priest, theologian, and founder of the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation, was born in Desio, Italy. He studied at the seminary in Venegono and was ordained in 1945.

Early Ministry and Theological Interests

Giussani taught at the seminary in Venegono, specializing in the theology of Eastern Christianity and Protestantism. He later taught at a classical high school in Milan and, in 1964, at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, where he established the youth movement Gioventù Studentesca.

Foundation of Communion and Liberation

In 1969, Gioventù Studentesca became Communion and Liberation, an independent movement led by Giussani until his death. In 1983, Giussani was given the honorary title of Monsignor by Pope John Paul II. He served as a consultant to the Congregation for the Clergy and the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

Giussani's Theology
