Biography of Igor Sergeev
Igor Dmitrievich Sergeev, a Russian military leader, was born on April 20, 1938, in the city of Verkhny Voroshilovgradskaya oblast (Ukraine). He is married to Tamara Alexandrovna Sergeeva, and they have a son named Dmitry.
Education and Military Career
In 1955, after completing high school in Makeevka, Sergeev enrolled in the Higher Naval Hydrographic School in Pushkino, Leningrad Oblast. He continued his education in Sevastopol at the Black Sea Higher Naval School named after P.S. Nakhimov. After graduating in 1960, he was assigned to the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union.
Sergeev excelled in his military career and held various positions within the Strategic Missile Forces. From 1973 to 1978, he served as a commander of a missile regiment, chief of staff of a missile division, and commander of a missile division. From 1980 to 1983, he was the chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 43rd Missile Army. From 1985 to 1989, he held positions such as the chief of the operational control, deputy chief of the Main Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces, and first deputy chief of the Main Staff of the RVSN. From 1989 to 1997, he served as the deputy commander-in-chief for combat training and commander-in-chief of the Strategic Missile Forces.
In May 1997, by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Sergeev was appointed as the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation. In the same year, he was awarded the rank of Marshal of the Russian Federation. He was a member of the Presidium of the Government of the Russian Federation and the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
In March 2001, Igor Dmitrievich Sergeev was appointed as an assistant to the President of the Russian Federation. He developed proposals to ensure strategic stability and strengthen military security of the country, especially considering the changing international relations. Since 2002, he has been coordinating the activities of veterans' organizations and appointed as the deputy chairman of the Russian organizational committee "Victory."
Achievements and Interests
Sergeev is the author of scientific papers and numerous publications on strategic stability, international security, and arms control. He holds a Doctor of Technical Sciences degree and is a laureate of the Russian Federation Government Prize in the field of science and technology. He is also an academician of the Russian Engineering Academy, the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, and the Academy of Military Sciences.
In recognition of his exceptional services to Russia, Igor Sergeev was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. He has received orders such as the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, "For Military Merit," and "For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" of the II and III degrees, as well as the Order of the Red Star, medals, and other distinctions. He has also been awarded foreign orders, including the "Star of the First Degree" (Yugoslavia), the "Manas" of the Third Degree (Kyrgyzstan), and the "Order of Unity" (South Korea).
Apart from his military career, Sergeev has a passion for sports and the study of the latest computer technologies. He currently resides and works in Moscow.
