Early Life and Military Education
Born in September 1889 in the village of Altautz, Latvia, Kārlis Rozītis hailed from a humble peasant family. In 1907, he graduated from urban school and enlisted in the military as a volunteer in 1908.
From 1910 to 1913, Rozītis attended the Vilnius Military School and graduated as a second lieutenant. He subsequently served in the 99th Ivanograd Infantry Regiment.
World War I and the Civil War
During World War I, Rozītis served as a company commander, reconnaissance chief, and commander of a machine gun crew. He rose to the rank of captain and battalion commander before the end of the war.
In June 1918, Rozītis joined the Red Army and fought in the Civil War. He held various command positions, including commander of the 3rd Brigade of the Latvian Rifle Division and commander of the 5th Army.
Interwar Career
After the Civil War, Rozītis remained in the Red Army. He served as an inspector of the Red Army's military educational institutions and as the commander of the 1st Rifle Division. In 1922, he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the Red Army's Military Academy.
From 1924 to 1926, Rozītis commanded the 11th Rifle Corps. Subsequently, he held various staff positions, including inspector of rifle and tactical affairs and assistant inspector of infantry. In 1932, he became inspector of engineering construction.
Academic and Military Roles
From 1933 to 1936, Rozītis served as the head of the Department of Strategy and Tactics at the Red Army's Military-Engineering Academy. He also held the position of deputy head of the academy.
In 1936, Rozītis was appointed deputy inspector of infantry of the Red Army. He was promoted to the rank of komdiv (brigade commander) in 1935.
Arrest and Rehabilitation
On December 13, 1937, Rozītis was arrested and charged with membership in an anti-Soviet organization. On April 26, 1938, he was sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR. The sentence was carried out on the same day.
