Biography of Ihsan Dogramaci

Ihsan Dogramaci was a renowned Turkish pediatrician and public figure. He was born in 1915 in the Iraqi city of Erbil, into a family of Iraqi Turkmen. His father, Ali Pasha Dogramaci, served as the mayor of Erbil, while his maternal grandfather, Mehmet Ali Kirdar, was a member of the Ottoman Parliament in Kirkuk.

Education and Career

Dogramaci completed his medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine at Istanbul University. He then pursued his medical training at a hospital in Ankara. In 1949, he became an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Ankara University, and in 1954, he obtained the title of professor. Over the years, he held positions as the rector of Ankara University, Middle East Technical University, and also taught at the University of Paris.

In 1967, Dogramaci founded Hacettepe University, and in 1984, he established Bilkent University, the first private university in Turkey. He was the father of three children, and his eldest son, Ali Dogramaci, currently serves as the rector of Bilkent University in Ankara.

Contributions and Recognition

Dogramaci served as the president of the International Pediatric Association (IPA) from 1968 until 1992, and later became the honorary president. He was a member of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization from 1976 to 1982 and a member of the Executive Committee of UNICEF from 1959 to 1985, serving as the chairman of the board twice. From 1958 to 2003, he was the president of the Turkish National Committee for UNICEF.

He was an honorary member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in India, France, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dogramaci was also a co-founder of the "Ihsan Dogramaci Family Health Foundation" under the World Health Organization, and the chairman of the "Turkish-Azerbaijani Friendship Society." He was the last surviving signatory of the Constitution of the World Health Organization in 1948.


Ihsan Dogramaci passed away on February 25, 2010, at the Hacettepe University Hospital in Turkey, due to multiple organ failure. His contributions to medicine, education, and public health continue to be recognized and celebrated both in Turkey and internationally.
