Early Life and Education

Ilya Alexandrovich Shlyapkin was born in 1858. He received his early education at the Third Saint Petersburg Gymnasium and subsequently enrolled at the University of Saint Petersburg. Shlyapkin completed his studies in 1881, earning a Master's degree in Historical and Philological Sciences.

Academic Career

Under the guidance of Professor Orest Miller, Shlyapkin was appointed to the Department of Russian Literature at the University of Saint Petersburg. In 1888, he began delivering lectures as a Privatdozent, and upon the demise of I.N. Zhdanov in 1901, he ascended to the position of professor.

Shlyapkin's contributions extended beyond the University. He taught at various educational institutions in Saint Petersburg, including the Higher Women's Courses (where he served as Dean of the History Department) and the Alexander Lyceum. He also held membership in the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Public Education.

Scholarly Publications

Shlyapkin's seminal publication was his magisterial dissertation, "Saint Demetrius of Rostov and His Time" (1891), which meticulously collated archival data. His other notable works include:
