Early Life and Career

Constantin Dăscălescu, a Romanian statesman, was born on May 10, 1925, in the commune of Comăneşti to a miner's family. Financial hardship forced him to start working as a miner at the age of 12. In 1945, he joined the Romanian Communist Party (RCP).

Rise through the Party Ranks

Dăscălescu graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. From 1954 to 1956, he served as the first secretary of the Regional Committee of the RCP in Hunedoara County. Subsequently, he became deputy head of the Organizational Department of the RCP Central Committee. From 1955 to 1960, he was a candidate member of the RCP Central Committee, and from 1960 to 1989, he was a full member. He also held various positions as a secretary of the RCP Central Committee between 1960 and 1984.

Role in the Jiu Valley Coal Miners' Strike

In 1977, Nicolae Ceaușescu sent Dăscălescu to address miner protests in the Jiu Valley. However, Dăscălescu failed to resolve the situation and was held hostage for two days.

Premiership and Conflict with Ceaușescu

From 1965 to 1967, Dăscălescu served as deputy prime minister and from 1967 to 1974 as first deputy prime minister of the Socialist Republic of Romania. In 1978, he became first deputy prime minister and chairman of the State Planning Committee. From 1979 to 1982, he held the position of prime minister. During his premiership, he attempted to address the country's economic crisis, but his efforts clashed with Ceaușescu's policies. Consequently, he was forced to resign.

Post-Premiership and Political Activities

From 1985 to 1986, Dăscălescu served as Romania's coal industry minister. In 1986, he was appointed chairman of the RCP Central Committee's Commission for Studying Party History. After Ceaușescu's overthrow, he attempted to form a new government, but it was not recognized and lasted less than an hour.

Retirement and Death

In 1990, Dăscălescu joined the Socialist Labor Party. The party failed to make a significant impact in subsequent elections and was eventually disbanded. Dăscălescu passed away from a heart attack.
