Early Life and Education

Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev was born on December 24, 1961, in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 1982, he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) and subsequently completed his postgraduate studies there.

Diplomatic Career

From 1985 to 1990, Aliyev served as a faculty member at MGIMO. In the early 1990s, he embarked on a commercial career in Moscow and Istanbul.

Return to Azerbaijan

In May 1994, Aliyev was appointed First Vice President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). In 1995, he was elected to the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Political Rise

In December 1999, Aliyev was elected Deputy Chairman of the "Yeni Azerbaijan" party (the country's ruling party). In 2001, he became First Deputy Chairman of the party.

National Olympic Committee

Since 1997, Aliyev has been the President of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

International Recognition

In January 2003, Aliyev was elected Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Premiership and Presidency

In August 2003, Aliyev was appointed Prime Minister of Azerbaijan. In October 2003, he won the presidential election of Azerbaijan.

Personal Life

Aliyev is a member of the Milli Mejlis (parliament) and is fluent in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, and French. He is married and has two daughters and one son.
