Early Life and Career
Illarion Vasilyev was born on November 5, 1910, in the village of Mungat (present-day Kemerovo Oblast) to a farming family. After completing elementary school, he worked in a shoemaking cooperative and a state-owned farm.
Military Service
In 1941, Vasilyev was drafted into the Red Army. On November 16, 1941, near the Dubosekovo railway junction, he participated in the legendary battle where 28 Soviet soldiers from the 1075th Rifle Regiment held off an overwhelming attack by German tanks. Vasilyev and his comrades destroyed 18 enemy tanks before succumbing to their wounds.
The Feat of 28 Panfilov's Men
This heroic defense became known as the "Feat of 28 Panfilov's Men." Vasilyev was severely injured in the battle and evacuated to a field hospital by local residents. For his bravery and leadership, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on July 21, 1942.
Post-War Life
In 1943, Vasilyev was demobilized due to his injuries. He resided in the village of Koksu in the Taldy-Kurgansk region until 1963, when he moved to the city of Kemerovo. He passed away on October 6, 1969.
