Early Life and Career
Born on March 22, 1917, in the village of Veselo-Voznesenka, Rostov Oblast, Feofan Ilyich Vasiliev was the son of working-class parents. After graduating from a secondary school, he worked as a mechanic on a boat for a fish cannery.
Military Service
In 1936, Vasiliev joined the Red Army and fought in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. With the outbreak of World War II, he served on the North Caucasus, Transcaucasus, Voronezh, and 1st Ukrainian Fronts, participating in the liberation of Ukraine.
Heroism at the Dnieper
Vasiliev's most notable achievement occurred during the Dnieper River crossing near the village of Studenets in September 1943. As commander of a squad in the 91st Independent Engineering Battalion, he led the construction of a pontoon bridge under heavy enemy fire, enabling the successful crossing of Soviet forces.
Post-War Years
After the war, Vasiliev returned to his hometown and worked in the agricultural sector. He became a manager at a pig farm and later a flour mill and dairy factory. Vasiliev passed away on February 14, 2000, and was buried in his native village.
Awards and Honors
For his exceptional courage and bravery, Vasiliev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on June 3, 1944. He also received the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, two Orders of the Red Star, and numerous medals.
