Early Life and Military Service
Illyodor Sofronyevich Goronovich, a prominent figure in Bulgarian history, was born into a military family. He began his service in the Russian Imperial Army as a lower-ranking volunteer in the 1st Pavlovsk Military School.
Role in the Russo-Turkish War
During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, Goronovich fought valiantly as a junior officer in the 9th Don Cossack Regiment. His distinguished service on the Balkan front earned him accolades and recognition.
Settlement in Bulgaria
After the war, Goronovich chose to settle in Kyustendil, Bulgaria. He joined the Bulgarian Army and rose through the ranks. Goronovich became the commander of the 3rd Company of the 2nd Kyustendil Infantry Battalion and was later appointed district military commander.
Governor and Honorary Citizen
In 1881, Goronovich was appointed as the first military governor of Kyustendil District. He oversaw the administration of the region during a critical period in Bulgarian history. For his contributions, he was honored with the prestigious title of first honorary citizen of Kyustendil.
Continued Service and Later Life
Goronovich remained in Bulgaria, holding positions as chief of security for the Macedonian border and district governor of Kyustendil. He married a Bulgarian woman and resided permanently in Kyustendil. After retiring from the Bulgarian Army with the rank of colonel, Goronovich passed away in Kyustendil on January 26, 1919. He was laid to rest in the Christian cemetery of the city, and a memorial plaque now marks the house where he once lived.
