Biography of Ilse Bing
Ilse Bing was a German-born photographer, born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1899, into a Jewish family. It is known that Ilse stumbled upon photography almost by accident. While gathering material for her dissertation on the history of German architecture, she needed a few photographs and purchased a 'Leica' camera. Little did she know at the time that she would become known as the "Queen of Leica," one of the most talented and significant European photographers.
Early Career
Ilse Bing quickly fell in love with the 'Leica' camera due to its size and convenience, and soon her dissertation became a thing of the past as she spent more and more time in her darkroom. Despite her family's strong opposition to her newfound passion, Ilse persevered. Soon, her photographs started appearing in German magazines and newspapers, and in the 1930s, she moved to Paris.
During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Bing was one of the few photographers working with the 'Leica' since many photographers of that era preferred large-format cameras. However, Bing's virtuoso shots quickly gained attention, earning her the title of "Queen of Leica." Her photographs began to appear in European exhibitions alongside masters of photography such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, and Andre Kertesz.
International Recognition
Ilse Bing's works were known for their accessibility and never being excessively emotional or artistic. In 1936, her works were included in the First Exhibition of Modern Photography at the Louvre, and in 1937, she traveled to New York, where her photographs were featured in the historical exhibition 'Photography 1839–1937' at the Museum of Modern Art.
Later Years
Bing lived in Paris for ten years, but with the start of World War II, she and her husband emigrated to the United States and settled in New York. It was there that she parted ways with her 'Leica' camera, transitioning to a large-format camera. Soon, her name became well-known and popular in the States, as Ilse earned a reputation as a highly talented portraitist. She continued photographing until the late 1950s when she shifted her focus to painting, collages, and writing poetry.
Ilse Bing passed away on March 10, 1998, at the age of 98. Interestingly, the interest in her photographs continues to this day, with exhibitions of her works still taking place worldwide.
