Early Life and Education
Türkan Akyol was born in Kozan, Turkey in 1940. She attended Atatürk Primary School and Adana Girls' High School. In 1964, she graduated with a degree in economics from Istanbul University.
Akyol pursued further studies at Oxford University in England, specializing in industrial relations and trade unions. She later attended the University of Oslo in Norway, focusing on worker participation in management. Her research efforts also included work at the Trades Union Congress and the Department of Employment in the United Kingdom. Akyol earned her Ph.D. in Turkey with her dissertation on "Wage Exchange Rates (Outside Turkey) and Their Analysis in Terms of the Turkish Economy."
Labor Union Leadership
Akyol held various leadership positions within labor unions from 1964 to 1975, including Director of the Collective Bargaining Department, Specialist in Industrial Relations, and General Secretary of the Paper Workers' Union.
Political Career
In 1983, Akyol became part of the founding members of the Nationalist Democracy Party (NDP). After its dissolution in 1986, she joined the Motherland Party (ANAP).
From 1983 to 1999, Akyol served as a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. She held the position of Minister of State in two cabinets under Mesut Yılmaz. Additionally, she served as Minister of Labor and Social Security under Turgut Özal and Yıldırım Akbulut. From June 30, 1997, to January 11, 1999, she was Minister of Public Works and Housing.
