Inguna Sudraba: A Latvian's Journey in Economics and Politics
Early Life and EducationBorn in Gulbene, Latvia, Inguna Sudraba excelled academically, graduating from Gulbene Secondary School with a gold medal in 1983. She pursued a higher education in economics at the University of Latvia, later expanding her knowledge with studies in the United States.
Government Service
Sudraba's career in public service began in the early 1990s when she was appointed Head of the Social Development and Analysis Department at the Ministry of Welfare. From 1992 to 1994, she served as the Chief Economist of the Ministry of Finance, transitioning to the role of Deputy State Secretary from 1994 to 2003. Notably, she also worked as the Deputy Vice-President of Lending at Parex Bank from 2003 to 2004.
State Comptroller of Latvia
In 2004, Sudraba reached the pinnacle of her career when she was appointed State Comptroller of the Republic of Latvia. During her tenure, she held this position until January 2013, playing a crucial role in ensuring the country's financial stability.
Political Involvement
Beyond her public service, Sudraba founded and led the political party "From the Heart for Latvia" (No sirds Latvijai). Her party aimed to create a more just and equitable society, emphasizing social welfare, education, and healthcare.
