Judit Varga: Hungarian Politician and Jurist
Judit Varga is a Hungarian politician and jurist who has served as Minister of Justice since July 12, 2019. She is a member of the Fidesz party.
Early Life and Education
Varga was born on September 10, 1980 in Miskolc, Hungary. She attended the Avasi Gymnasium in Miskolc from 1993 to 1999. She then studied law at the University of Miskolc from 1999 to 2004, and received a Republican Scholarship from 2002 to 2004. In 2003, she received an Erasmus Scholarship to study at the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Umwelt Nürtingen-Geislingen in Germany. Varga was also captain of the university's basketball team in the second division league (NB I. B) from 2001 to 2004. She graduated from the University of Miskolc with honors (summa cum laude) in 2004.
Legal and Political Career
Varga worked as a legal trainee at the Budapest Regional Court and the Central District Court of Pest from September 2006 to August 2009. In August 2009, she joined the office of Member of the European Parliament János Áder, where she worked as a political advisor. She held similar positions in the offices of Erik Bánki and György Hölvényi until May 2018.
On May 22, 2018, Varga was appointed State Secretary for European Union Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office. On July 12, 2019, she was appointed Minister of Justice in the fourth Orbán cabinet, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. She succeeded László Trócsányi in this role.
Family and Languages
Varga is married to Péter Magyar and has three children. She speaks English, German, French, and Spanish.
