Ingvar Kamprad, born on March 30, 1926, was an industrialist from Sweden and the founder of the home furnishing retail company, IKEA.

Early Ventures

Kamprad entered the business world at a young age. At the age of 15, he began selling matches from his bicycle in Stockholm. He then expanded his range of products to include fish, Christmas decorations, pencils, and pens. In 1943, he established a small company and named it IKEA, which was an acronym for his initials (IK), the farm where he was born (Elmtaryd), and the village where he grew up (Agunnaryd). Initially, the company focused on mail-order sales, but Kamprad soon acquired an old factory and transformed it into a furniture production facility.

The Rise of IKEA

IKEA gained popularity for its affordable furniture, which sparked conflicts with the Swedish furniture sellers' association in the late 1950s. However, this did not deter Kamprad from expanding his business both within and beyond Sweden. His frugality was legendary, as he preferred to stay in budget hotels with no more than three stars during his trips abroad. In Sweden, he drove a Volvo 240 GL, which he purchased 13 years prior. Additionally, Kamprad often used public transportation, where he would present his pension card to obtain discounts.

Apart from his business endeavors, Kamprad's biography reveals various other intriguing aspects. In his childhood, he attended Nazi gatherings on several occasions (although he later publicly apologized for this). He also struggled with alcoholism for a period of time, which he deeply regrets. Kamprad faced memory issues, leading him to employ dyslexia principles in his stores. All products sold at IKEA bear Swedish names that are phonetically similar, making it easier for him to remember them.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1976, Kamprad relocated to Epalinges, Switzerland, where he established his permanent residence. A few years ago, he stepped back from the day-to-day management of IKEA and handed over the reins to his sons. Under their leadership, the company's empire expanded to include over 180 stores in more than 30 countries worldwide. Swedish magazines consider him the wealthiest person globally, estimating his fortune at $53 billion. However, Forbes ranked him sixth in 2005, up from 12th in 2004, with a net worth of $23 billion. This discrepancy was due to differences in calculating capital.
