A Childhood Impoverished by Repression
Nelly Khrystenko was born on August 14, 1919, into a family of an educator. Her father's arrest and subsequent repression clouded her upbringing.
A Life Touched by War
In 1923, Khrystenko and her family relocated to Kharkiv, where she completed secondary school and later graduated from the historical faculty of Kharkiv University in 1941. The outbreak of World War II prompted her to join the Prosvita society. During this turbulent period, she briefly worked as a typist in the city administration.
A Spark of Poetry Amidst Darkness
Khrystenko's lyrical poem "Привет тебе, весна!" ("Greetings to You, Spring!") found publication in the Kharkiv-based newspaper "Nova Ukraina." This work hinted at her future literary pursuits.
A Teacher by Profession, a Writer by Passion
From 1944 to 1958, Khrystenko dedicated herself to teaching. However, in the late 1950s, she rekindled her passion for writing, focusing primarily on children's literature.
A Literary Legacy
In 1960, Khrystenko joined the Writers' Union of Ukraine. Her marriage to German Richard Durner in November 1994 marked a significant chapter in her life.
A Return to Roots
Following her husband's passing, Khrystenko returned to Kharkiv. She passed away on August 21, 2001, leaving behind a legacy of children's literature that captivated generations of young readers.
