Early Life and Education
Innes Ireland was born on June 12, 1930, in Mytholmroyd, Yorkshire, England. His father was a veterinary surgeon. Ireland's family moved back to Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, during his childhood. He pursued an engineering apprenticeship with Rolls-Royce, initially in Glasgow and later in London.
Formula One Career
Ireland made his Formula One debut in 1959 with Lotus, where he spent the next three seasons. He showed promise early on, finishing in the points twice in his debut season, including a fourth-place finish in his first race, the Dutch Grand Prix. He finished 14th in the Drivers' Championship that year (5 points).
1960 proved to be Ireland's most successful year: 3 podiums, 18 points, and a fourth-place finish overall.
In 1961, Ireland earned his first and only victory, winning the US Grand Prix, the season's final race. However, three retirements due to mechanical failures prevented him from contending for the championship title. He finished the season in sixth place (12 points).
Move to BRP and Later Years
After the 1961 season, Ireland left Lotus for BRP. 1962 brought disappointment, with 5 retirements (4 consecutive) and only one points finish (fifth place at the South African Grand Prix), resulting in a 16th-place finish in the Championship (2 points).
The 1963 season was slightly better, with fewer retirements and more points finishes (fourth places at the Dutch and Italian Grand Prix). He finished ninth (6 points).
In practice for the 1964 Monaco Grand Prix, Ireland crashed, preventing him from starting the prestigious street race and also the subsequent Dutch Grand Prix, where he had traditionally performed well. That season was also his last in which he scored points (fifth places at the Austrian and Italian Grand Prix), finishing 14th in the Championship (4 points).
Ireland left BRP for the small private team RPR, which ran the same cars as BRP. Three retirements and three non-points finishes (best result: ninth place at the Italian Grand Prix) were the result for Ireland in the 1965 season. The team ran out of funds and did not even start the season-ending Mexican Grand Prix.
In 1966, Ireland raced in the final two races of the season for another small team, BWR, but retired both times. He subsequently retired from racing.
Post-Career Activities
After his racing career, Ireland pursued military and engineering activities until his death in 1993.
