Early Life and Education
Ivan Fyodorovich Bezpalov was born in Russia in 1877. He began his architectural education at the Tomsk Alekseevskoye Real School (1895-1897) before enrolling at the Higher Artistic School of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1898. During his studies, he received instruction in architecture, painting under Ilya Repin, and sculpture under Vasily Beklemishev.
Architectural Work
In 1910, Bezpalov graduated from the Academy as an architectural artist, recognized for his design of the State Duma building. While still a student, he assisted architect V.A. Pokrovsky in the construction of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Shliselburg (1904-1907). He oversaw the construction of a club, residential buildings, and exhibition pavilions on the site.
In 1909, Bezpalov contributed drawings and sketches for the jubilee album of the Shliselburg Powder Plants. His work included blueprints, interior designs, machinery sketches, and historical panoramas of the plants from an aerial perspective.
Political Involvement and Imprisonment
From 1927 to 1928, Bezpalov served as a member of the Presidium of the Leningrad City Council of the National Economy. However, in March 1931, he was arrested and imprisoned. In 1935, he was granted early release due to the intervention of physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov. Bezpalov settled in Koltuzha and was rehabilitated in 1989.
Legacy
Ivan Bezpalov passed away in Koltuzha and was buried in the Serafimovskoye Cemetery. His architectural and artistic contributions, particularly his involvement in the construction of the Shliselburg Church and his detailed drawings and sketches, showcase his talent and dedication to his craft.
