Reign of the First Intermediate Period

Intiotef III was a pharaoh of the First Intermediate Period of Ancient Egypt, ruling from approximately 2063 to 2055 BC. He belonged to the 11th Dynasty and inherited power from his father, Intiotef II Wahankh.

Succession after a Long Reign

Intiotef III ascended to the throne after his father's reign of nearly 50 years. He adopted the Horus name Nakhtnebtepnefer, which translates to "The Lord of the City is Mighty at the Peak of Good Fortune."

Evidence of Dynasty

The reigns of Intiotef II Wahankh and Intiotef III are supported by inscriptions found on the funerary steles of Chechi and Intiotef. These steles confirm the succession of Intiotef III after Wahankh.

Duration of Reign

Given his father's extended reign, it is assumed that Intiotef III was not young when he became pharaoh. His rule is estimated to have lasted no more than 10 years, but the exact duration remains uncertain.

Identification in Turin King List

The Turin King List potentially identifies Intiotef III as the ruler with an 8-year reign following a pharaoh with a reign of 49 years, possibly representing Intiotef II.

Control in Upper Egypt

A stela discovered in Abydos bears Intiotef III's name, indicating his continued control over the Tininite Nome, which had been acquired by his father.

Contemporaneous Events

Intiotef III's rise coincides with the decline of the 9th Herakleopolitan Dynasty (House of Khety). The death of Merikara Khety IV marked the end of their rule.
