Early Life and Lineage

Iolu Abil hails from the island of Tanna in the southernmost province of Tafea. He was born to George Yavinian and Nassaiu and inherited the chiefly title of Yaniniko (herald of the chief). This prestigious title was bestowed upon him by his grandfather, Paramount Chief Yaramara Yaouti of Tanna. Abil also serves as the head of the Presbyterian Church in Vanuatu.

Political Career



Abil's political journey began with his appointment as Minister of Lands in the first independent government of Vanuatu led by Prime Minister Walter Lini. From 1991 to 2008, he held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Justice, Minister of Home Affairs, and Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Industry.

Presidency



Abil was elected as the President of Vanuatu on September 2, 2009. He served in this role until the end of his term on September 2, 2014. During his presidency, he focused on promoting economic development and social welfare through policies such as the "Growth and Job Creation" plan.

Post-Presidency



Following his presidency, Abil continued to contribute to Vanuatu's public life. He played a vital role in the private sector as the Chairman of Air Vanuatu. He also maintained his commitments to social justice and served as the Ombudsman from November 2004 to April 2005.

Religious Involvement



Abil is deeply involved in religious affairs and is the head of the Presbyterian Church in Vanuatu. He has used his religious platform to promote peace, unity, and values-based governance.
