Biography of Ion Iliescu

Ion Iliescu, the President of Romania from 1990 to 2004, was born on March 3, 1930. After graduating from the Bucharest Polytechnic Institute and the Moscow Energy Institute, he decided to pursue a career in politics. He climbed the ranks and even reached the position of Secretary of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party. However, in 1971, he did not support Nicolae Ceausescu's idea of implementing the Chinese "Cultural Revolution" in Romania and fell out of favor.

The December 1989 revolution propelled Iliescu to the leadership of the National Salvation Front. On June 20, 1990, he became the President of Romania and was re-elected to the highest state office two years later. Over the course of six years, Romania's reforms stagnated, and the standard of living continuously declined. As a result, the "New Romanians" led by Emil Constantinescu won the 1996 elections, and Iliescu's party became the opposition.

Iliescu's wife, Nina, whom he met in Moscow, where she was studying at the Mendeleev Chemical Technological Institute. The couple does not have any children.
