Patriarch of All Russia: Ioasaf II

On February 10, 1667, Archimandrite Ioasaf of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra was elected as the new Patriarch of Moscow.

Early Life and Rise to Patriarchate

Ioasaf's archimandrite position in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra had brought him into contact with influential figures, including Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. In 1661, during the war with Poland, Ioasaf and his monks were requested to fast for three days. After the Russian victory, the Tsar attributed the triumph to Ioasaf's prayers and the intercession of St. Sergius.

Elevation to Patriarchate and Major Events

On May 1667, Ioasaf II hosted the Great Moscow Council, attended by Eastern Orthodox Patriarchs and numerous Russian bishops. The council solidified the reforms initiated by Patriarch Nikon, including the adoption of revised liturgical books and the condemnation of Old Believers as schismatics.

Ioasaf II continued Nikon's efforts to reform and print богослужебные books. He also issued an instruction on iconography, emphasizing the use of traditional Russian styles and limiting the influence of Western painting techniques.

Missionary Activities

Under Ioasaf II's leadership, missionary efforts were expanded to the northeastern frontiers of Russia. Russian missionaries spread Christianity among various indigenous peoples, with particular attention given to Siberia.

Legacy and Death

Patriarch Ioasaf II's reign of five years witnessed significant events in the history of the Russian Church. He was committed to the reforms of Nikon and actively promoted the purity of Orthodox faith while supporting cultural and educational endeavors. Ioasaf II passed away on February 17, 1672, and was buried in the Dormition Cathedral in Moscow.
