Early Life and Education
Dominc Duka was born on April 26, 1943, in Hradec Králové, eastern Bohemia. He entered the Order of Preachers on January 6, 1969, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1970. Duka studied theology at the theological faculty in Litoměřice and obtained a licentiate in theology from Warsaw in 1979.
Suppression and Underground Activities
In 1975, Duka was banned from working as a priest by the Czechoslovak authorities. For nearly 15 years, until 1989, he worked as a draftsman at the Škoda plant while secretly serving as a master of novices and teaching theology.
Episcopal Career
From 1986 to 1998, Duka served as provincial of the Dominicans of Bohemia and Moravia. He became the Bishop of Hradec Králové on June 6, 1998, and received episcopal ordination on September 26, 1998. On February 13, 2010, he succeeded Cardinal Miloslav Vlk as Archbishop of Prague.
Cardinalate
On January 6, 2012, it was announced that Pope Benedict XVI would elevate Duka to the cardinalate at the consistory of February 18, 2012. At the consistory, he was created a Cardinal-Priest of the Church of Ss. Marcellino e Pietro, receiving the cardinal's hat and ring.
Later Career
As Archbishop of Prague and a cardinal, Duka has consistently advocated for religious freedom, social justice, and Christian values. He remains an influential figure in the Roman Catholic Church in the Czech Republic and beyond.
