Early Life and Military Career
Born in September 1891 in the village of Novoselki, Belarus, Ivan Blazhevich displayed a profound interest in the military from a young age. He graduated from a trade school and the Vilna Military School in 1913. Upon graduation, he served as a junior officer in the 70th Ryazhsk Infantry Regiment.
World War I
During World War I, Blazhevich displayed exceptional courage and leadership skills. He commanded a company and later a battalion, and played a key role in the preparatory courses for the 5th Army of the Northern Front. In fierce battles, he sustained three wounds and earned several combat decorations and the prestigious George's Weapon (1916).
Russian Civil War
In 1918, Blazhevich joined the Red Army and actively participated in the Russian Civil War. He held various command positions, including Assistant Commander and Commander of the 4th Regiment of the 6th Moscow Infantry Division. As Commander of the 59th Infantry Division (1920), he led his troops to victory against the White Cossack forces of Ataman Annenkov, earning two Orders of the Red Banner.
Post-Civil War Career
Following the Civil War, Blazhevich held prominent positions in the Soviet Armed Forces and the Commissariat of Defense. He commanded the 1st Army of the Turkestan Front and served as Chief of Staff of the 16th Rifle Corps.
Pioneer of Soviet Air Defense
In 1926, Blazhevich became Inspector of Rifle-Tactical Affairs in the Training and Construction Department of the Red Army. He was instrumental in developing Soviet air defense (PVO) and was appointed the first Chief of the 6th Department of the RKKA Staff (1930), responsible for PVO matters.
Leadership in PVO
Blazhevich played a pivotal role in establishing the PVO Directorate within the RKKA Central Command and in organizing and training the first PVO corps and divisions. He recognized the need to strengthen the country's air defense and contributed significantly to its development.
Arrest and Rehabilitation
In 1938, Blazhevich was arrested on charges of treason and sentenced to death. He was executed in 1939. In 1956, he was posthumously rehabilitated and his reputation restored.
Legacy
Ivan Blazhevich left a lasting legacy as a distinguished military commander and a visionary leader in the field of Soviet air defense. His contributions to the development of PVO laid the foundation for the robust air defense system that protected the USSR during World War II and beyond.
