Early Life and Communist Activism
Iosif Chișinevschi was born in 1905 in the Bessarabian town of Bălți to an impoverished family. In 1928, he joined the illegal communist party of Romania, adopting the party pseudonym "Chișinevschi" after his wife, Liuba, a fellow communist activist.
Imprisonments and Continued Activism
Chișinevschi's political involvement led to his arrest in 1930 for participating in underground organizations. He was sentenced to six years in prison and released prematurely in 1932. However, he was rearrested in 1933 and held in prison until 1936. Following his release, he found work at a printing house while continuing to participate in the underground communist movement.
Party Leadership and Soviet Influence
In 1940, Chișinevschi was elected to the central committee of the Romanian Communist Party (RCP). He was again arrested that year and sentenced to 25 years of hard labor, which he served alongside Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. In 1944, he was released from prison along with other political prisoners following the fall of the Antonescu regime.
From 1948 to 1957, Chișinevschi served as a member of the RCP's Politburo. He held the position of Chairman of the Department of Propaganda and Culture from 1948 to 1952. Chișinevschi adhered to a pro-Soviet and Stalinist line, which was consistent with the party's official stance at the time.
Political Opposition and Later Life
After the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Chișinevschi took an oppositional stance towards Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. On July 3, 1957, he was removed from the Politburo at a plenary session of the RCP's central committee, along with Miron Constantinescu. Chișinevschi and Constantinescu were later accused of supporting the Stalinist regime in Romania.
In his later years, Chișinevschi served as director of the Casa Scânteii (House of the Spark) in Bucharest, where the official party newspaper was published.
