Early Life and Military Career
Pietro Colletta was a renowned Neapolitan historian and statesman. His military career began in 1799, when he participated in the uprising against King Ferdinand IV of Naples, leading to the establishment of the Parthenopean Republic.
Under Murat and the Austrian War
When Joachim Murat ascended to the Neapolitan throne, Colletta was appointed head of the engineering department. In 1815, he fought against the Austrian forces alongside Carlo Filangieri.
Post-Restoration
After the Restoration, Colletta's services were acknowledged, and he remained in government service. In 1820, he was dispatched to Sicily to quell a revolutionary uprising but returned to Naples and was appointed Minister of War by Parliament.
Exile and Historical Works
Following the suppression of the revolution, Colletta was imprisoned in the Sant'Elmo fortress and later exiled to Brno in Moravia. He was eventually granted permission to reside in Florence, where he wrote his acclaimed historical work, "Storia del reame di Napoli dal 1734 sino al 1725." This work, annotated by Carlo de'Rossi di Ulloa, was published in Naples in 1878.
Later Years and Legacy
Colletta's insightful historical writings and political contributions earned him recognition. He published a collection of his articles in Naples in 1861. A biography by Gino Capponi was published in Florence in 1849 and in Naples in 1861.
Colletta's legacy as a historian and a figure of the Neapolitan Revolution continues to inspire generations. His historical writings provide a valuable account of the tumultuous period in the Kingdom of Naples and have played a significant role in shaping the understanding of this era.
