Early Life and Education
Iosif Tolchanov, born on May 11, 1891, in Moscow, began his artistic journey early. At 11, he moved to Lège, France, to study at the prestigious University of Liège. Later, he returned to Moscow and joined the Mamonovskaya Studio.
Career as an Actor
In 1918, Tolchanov joined the studio of legendary director Yevgeny Vakhtangov. There, he honed his craft, playing roles such as Nyunin and Kalashnikov in Chekhov's "The Wedding" and Barakha in Gozzi's "Princess Turandot."
Notable Performances
Throughout his career, Tolchanov's performances captivated audiences. His portrayal of the wise elder Magara in "Virineya" (1925) and the complex Savely in "The Badgers" (1927) demonstrated his ability to create nuanced characters from unconventional materials.
Tolchanov's repertoire extended to classical roles, such as Arbenin in Lermontov's "Masquerade" (1941) and Pino in Virty's "The Conspiracy of the Doomed" (1950). For the latter, he received the Stalin Prize in 1950.
Directing Accomplishments
Beyond acting, Tolchanov also made his mark as a director at the Vakhtangov Theater. His notable works include "The Party of Honest People" (1927), "The Fifth Horizon" (1932), and "The Distant" (1935). As a co-director, he collaborated on productions such as "Virineya," "The Rift," "Intervention," and "Dostyaev and Others."
Teaching and Film Career
Tolchanov made significant contributions to theatrical education. He taught at the Uzbek Theater Studio, the Yakut Studio of GITIS, and the Shchukin Theater School. He became a professor at the latter in 1946.
Biographical Details
Tolchanov's birth name was Tolchan. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1962. Tolchanov passed away on August 24, 1981, in Moscow. He is buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
