Biography
Early Life and EducationHungarian-Norwegian violinist, violist, and musicologist, Alexander Hellwas born in 1899. He studied under the renowned Hungarian violinist Jenő Hubay.
Budapest Quartet Years
In 1917, Hell joined the original lineup of the Budapest Quartet, a prominent chamber ensemble of interwar Europe. As violist, he played a pivotal role in the quartet's legacy.
Departure and Norway Residency
In 1935, Hell departed from the Budapest Quartet and settled in Bergen, Norway. He became first violinist in inaugural ensemble of the Bergen String Quartet in 1944.
Scholarly Contributions
In 1952, Hell published his theoretical monograph "Introduction to the Origins and Structure of Music" ("Innføring i Musikksprakets Opprinnelse og Struktur"). In addition, he authored educational materials for violinists, including a collection of exercises for the right hand.
