Biography of Irek Mukhamedov
Early LifeIrek Mukhamedov was born in Kazan in 1960. He studied at the Moscow Academy of Choreography.
Career at the Bolshoi Theater
In 1981, Mukhamedov won the Grand Prix and the Gold Medal at the International Ballet Artists Competition in Moscow. He was immediately invited to the Bolshoi Theater and became the youngest performer of the role of Spartacus in Yuri Grigorovich's ballet of the same name. He was a principal dancer at the Bolshoi Theater for 9 years, performing lead male roles in ballets such as "Ivan the Terrible," "Don Quixote," "Swan Lake," "Romeo and Juliet," "Giselle," "Raymonda," and "Legend of Love."
International Recognition and Move to London
In 1988, Mukhamedov was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Prize as the world's best dancer. In 1990, he made the decision to leave Russia and joined the Royal Ballet in London. His presence inspired choreographer Kenneth MacMillan to create a duet with Darcy Bussell, which was performed at a special evening dedicated to the Queen Mother's 90th birthday. Mukhamedov debuted in a wide range of classical and contemporary roles with the Royal Ballet, including works by Kenneth MacMillan, Frederick Ashton, Ashley Page, and William Tuckett.
Solo Career and Choreography
In 1992, Mukhamedov formed his own small company for short dance seasons in the UK and abroad. He collaborated with Kim Brandstrup and Arc Dance Company, and they premiered the ballet "Othello" together. Brandstrup later choreographed another ballet for Mukhamedov called "Don Juan." Mukhamedov received numerous dance awards worldwide and was included in the honorary New Year's List in January 2000. He began to focus more on creating his own choreography, and in the same year, he was invited to stage "Swan Lake" at the National Theatre in Warsaw and created his first ballet for his own company called "Four Riders."
Teaching Career
Mukhamedov has also established himself as a respected teacher. He has worked as a guest tutor and rehearsal director for various ballet companies and schools, including the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Bordeaux Ballet, and the English National Ballet School. In 2005, he became a permanent teacher at the Elmhurst School for Dance, in collaboration with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Director of the Athens Opera Ballet
In 2007, Irek Mukhamedov took on the role of director of the ballet company at the Athens Opera.
