Early Life and Education

Irena Degutienė was born in Lithuania and graduated from the Medical Faculty of Vilnius State University in 1974.

Medical Career

From 1974 to 1994, Degutienė worked extensively in the medical field, holding positions from therapist at a cotton mill to Chief Medical Officer at Vilnius University Hospital.

Political Career

Member of Parliament and Minister (1996-2009)

In 1994, Degutienė joined the Union of Conservatives and Christian Democrats party. She was elected to the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) in 1996 and served as Minister of Labor and Social Security from 1996 to 2000 in the governments of Gediminas Vagnorius, Rolandas Paksas, and Andrius Kubilius.

Speaker of the Seimas (2009-2012)

On September 17, 2009, Degutienė was elected Speaker of the Seimas, making her the second woman to hold one of the three highest государственных постов in Lithuania. She served in this role until 2012.

Retirement from Politics

After her term as Speaker, Degutienė retired from active politics. She remained a member of the Conservative party but did not hold any elected offices.
