Early Life and Education
Irina Akimova was born on April 26, 1960, in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In 1982, she graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Kharkiv State University.
Academic Career
In the mid-1980s, Akimova defended her candidate's dissertation in economics. She worked as the Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Political Consulting in Kyiv, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Research at the University of Warsaw, Research Fellow at the Economic Department of the University of Magdeburg, and Director of the analytical center "Blue Ribbon" LLC. She also served as an Associate Professor at the Department of Management of the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute."
Political Career
Akimova joined the Party of Regions in October 2007 and was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine in the 2007 parliamentary elections. She became Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Policy. Akimova also held the post of Minister of Economics in Viktor Yanukovych's shadow opposition government.
First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration
On February 25, 2010, Akimova was appointed First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine. She was also appointed Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on March 16, 2010.
Advisor to the President
On January 24, 2014, Akimova was dismissed from her post as First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration and appointed as Advisor to the President of Ukraine and Representative of the President in the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
