Early Life and Musical EducationIrina Otieva, a celebrated jazz vocalist and Honored Artist of Russia, was born into a lineage of Armenian nobility. She began her musical journey by studying piano at a music school. Her talent was evident early on when she won her first prestigious award, becoming a laureate of a jazz festival in Moscow in 1976.
Jazz Breakthrough and International Acclaim
In 1976, Otieva enrolled in the Estrada department at the Gnessin State Musical College. She simultaneously performed with Igor Bril's jazz ensemble and studied jazz vocals at the Moscow Experimental Jazz Studio. Her collaboration with Oleg Lundstrem's orchestra further solidified her standing.
First Album and Recognition
Otieva graduated from the Gnessin College's Estrada department in 1980. Her international success began in 1982 when she won the All-Russian Competition for the Best Performance of Soviet Songs and the "8 Hits in the Studio" competition in Berlin.
International Tours and Major Contests
Throughout the 1980s, Otieva became the first artist to perform jazz in Russian at various international competitions and events. She won the First Prize at the All-Union Variety Artists Competition (1983) and the Grand Prix at the International Song Contest of the Baltic Countries (1983).
Moscow Concert Organization and "Stimul-Bend"
In 1985, Otieva joined the Moscow Concert Organization and formed her own group, "Stimul-Bend," with which she continues to perform.
Continued Success and Accolades
Otieva's talent and unwavering commitment to her craft earned her the "For the Preservation of Creative Individuality" award at the final "Song of the Year" festival (1994). In 1995, she graced the stage of "Lincoln Center" in New York for the J. V. C. World Jazz Festival alongside renowned musicians like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.
Honored Artist of Russia and Noble Title
In 1997, Otieva was bestowed the prestigious title of "Honored Artist of Russia." Four years later, she was recognized for her cultural contributions and awarded the Order of Merit for Revival of the Fatherland. Additionally, her aristocratic title was restored in 2001.
Teaching and Political Involvement
In 2006, Otieva began teaching vocals at the Gnessin Musical Academy's newly established Estrada and Jazz department. She joined the Yabloko political party in 2004.
Film and Television
Otieva has recorded songs for over 60 films and starred in two feature films: "Thirst for Passion" (1991) and "The Jester's Revenge" (1993). She also appeared in the popular "Old Songs about the Main" television series.
