Biography of Irina Slutskaya
Irina Slutskaya, a Russian figure skater, is one of the most successful athletes in the history of the sport. Born in Moscow on February 9, 1979, Irina's parents, Eduard and Natalya Slutskaya, were expecting a son but were surprised by the arrival of a daughter. Irina's interest in figure skating began at a young age when her grandmother took her to the Moscow Sports Club for Figure Skating and Choreography. She started training under the guidance of coach Zhanna Gromova at the age of six and quickly showed promise in the sport.

Early Success and Junior Competitions
Irina's first significant victory came in 1991 when she won the bronze medal at the USSR Junior Championships. She continued to excel in junior competitions, winning eighth place at the World Championships in 1992 and gold in 1993. In 1996, Irina transitioned to the senior level and won the European Championships and a bronze medal at the World Championships. Her unique free skate program, featuring a combination of triple salchow and triple rittberger jumps, was recognized as the best at the 1997 World Championships, despite only placing fourth overall. However, the following season proved to be challenging, and Irina struggled to win any competitions.

Comeback and Olympic Success
Irina contemplated retiring from figure skating but received tremendous support from her future husband, Sergei Miheev. In the next season, she returned with a unique program that included a triple lutz and triple rittberger combination. This program led to victories at the Russian and European Championships and a second-place finish with a perfect score at the World Championships. The pinnacle of Irina's career came in 2002 when she won silver at the Salt Lake City Olympics and finally became the World Champion. However, health issues almost ended her career in 2003. Diagnosed with vasculitis, Irina had to undergo extensive treatment and overcome the side effects of medication. Despite the challenges, she continued to compete and won the Russian, European, and World Championships in 2005.
Transition to Television and Ice Shows
After winning her seventh European Championship and a bronze medal at the 2006 Olympics, Irina decided to retire from competitive skating. However, she remained active in the sport by participating in various ice shows such as "Winx on Ice," "Sleeping Beauty on Ice," "Kings on Ice," and the recent production of "Anastasia on Ice." She also explored other avenues in the entertainment industry, appearing in documentaries, films, and television shows. Irina completed courses in television hosting in 2006 and became a popular television presenter, hosting sports news and commentating on figure skating events.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Throughout her career, Irina's personal life has been the subject of many rumors. She is married to Sergei Miheev, whom she met at a vacation resort when she was 16. Sergei, a former boxer, has been a source of support throughout Irina's career. They have two children, Artem (born in 2007) and Varya (born in 2010). While neither of their children has shown a particular interest in figure skating, they both pursue music and performing arts. Irina is an ambassador for the 2014 Olympics and actively works with children from sports schools and orphanages, conducting masterclasses and promoting the sport. Despite her retirement from competitive skating, Irina Slutskaya continues to make an impact in the figure skating world and beyond.
