Irina Varvynets

Ukrainian biathlete Irina Varvynets has achieved significant success on the international stage, particularly in the relay discipline. She has earned medals at the World Championships, European Championships, and European Junior Championships.

Junior Successes

Varvynets' talent emerged during the 2011/2012 season at the junior level. She triumphed in the pursuit race at the Open European Championships in Brezno-Osrblie, Slovakia. She also claimed silver in the sprint and bronze in the mixed relay. At the Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti, Finland, she contributed to Ukraine's bronze medal in the women's relay.

The following season, Varvynets earned bronze in the relay at the Open European Championships in Bansko, Bulgaria, this time competing at the adult level. At the Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria, she placed second in the junior women's relay.

World Cup Debut and Breakthrough

Varvynets made her World Cup debut in the 2013-14 season in Antholz, Italy. Despite finishing 61st in the sprint race, her performance marked the beginning of her international career.

In the 2014-15 season, Varvynets became a regular member of Ukraine's World Cup team. She achieved her first podium finish, a third-place result in the mixed relay at the Nove Mesto stage. In Holmenkollen, she broke into the top ten in individual races, placing seventh in the individual event. This accomplishment remains her best personal result as of February 2017.

First World Championship Medals

Varvynets competed in her first adult World Championships that season in Kontiolahti, Finland. Her most notable result was 26th place in the pursuit race. She concluded the season ranked 47th in the overall World Cup standings.

The 2015-16 season saw Varvynets ascend to the top step of the podium with Ukraine's relay team in Ruhpolding, Germany. She added another podium finish in Presque Isle, USA, with a third-place finish in the relay. At the 2016 World Championships in Holmenkollen, she broke into the top ten with a ninth-place result in the individual race. She ended the season in 34th place in the overall World Cup rankings.

Continued Success

The 2016-17 season brought further success for Varvynets. She earned a bronze medal in the relay at the Pokljuka stage. At the 2017 World Championships in Hochfilzen, she secured her first World Championship medal, a silver, in the women's relay with Ukraine. At the Kontiolahti World Cup stage, she equaled her personal best in individual races, finishing seventh in the pursuit. Additionally, she placed third in the mixed relay. She wrapped up the season ranked 41st overall in the World Cup.
