Biography of Iris DeMent
Early LifeIris DeMent is an American folk and country singer known for her simple and heartfelt songs. Born in a large farming family near Paragould, Arkansas, Iris was the fourteenth and youngest child of her father, Pat DeMent's second marriage. When Iris was just three years old, her family's farm fell into decline, and they were forced to leave their home and seek a better life in California. From a young age, Iris was drawn to rock and roll, folk, and country rhythms that she listened to on the radio.
Pursuing a Musical Career
At the age of seventeen, Iris dropped out of school and started working at K-Mart. Although her job and life at the time were not entirely satisfying, Iris realized that what attracted her to life was writing and singing songs. She wrote her first song while living in Kansas and, within two years, signed her first contract with the recording studio "Rounder Records" in 1992. Her debut album, the beautiful and melancholic "Infamous Angel," immediately caught the attention of listeners and brought Iris Dement into the spotlight.
Musical Success
In 1991, Iris married Elmer McCall, but the marriage was not successful and ended in divorce. In 1994, Iris recorded her second album, simply titled "My Life." The success of this record earned her a nomination for a Grammy award. Her next two albums achieved similar success. Despite her immense popularity, Iris DeMent remained down-to-earth and genuine. She did not sell or impose anything on her audience. Iris simply sang about her life, using her incredible voice to share simple and relatable stories through her songs. On November 21, 2002, Iris DeMent married popular singer-songwriter Greg Brown. She continues to captivate audiences with her heartfelt performances and soulful voice.
