Hieromonk of the Russian Church

Irodion was a hieromonk, or ordained priest, of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was a disciple, tonsured monk, and successor to Saint Alexander of Svir.

Biographer

In 1545, with the blessing of Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow and Archbishop Theodosius of Novgorod, as well as at the request of the brethren, Irodion composed a hagiography of his teacher, Saint Alexander of Svir.

Literary Style

Irodion's hagiography was written in a simple and straightforward style, devoid of elaborate embellishments. He relied on his personal recollections of Saint Alexander.

Popularity and Attribution

Irodion's hagiography gained widespread recognition and became a part of the Makarian Menaion, a collection of lives of saints. It is frequently encountered in manuscripts. Additionally, Irodion is believed to have authored the liturgical service dedicated to Saint Alexander.
