Early Life and Education

Born into an aristocratic family as the younger brother of William Compton, Henry Compton received his education at Oxford University.

Episcopal Career

In 1674, Compton was consecrated as Bishop of Oxford. A year later, he was elevated to the prestigious position of Bishop of London. As a mark of royal favor, he was appointed to the Privy Council.

Court Influence

Compton wielded considerable influence at the court of King Charles II. He was entrusted with the religious education of the future queens, Princesses Mary and Anne.

Moderate Anglicanism and Dissent

Compton adhered to a moderate Anglicanism, advocating for conciliation with dissenting religious groups. However, he firmly opposed the papism of King James II.

Persecution and Exile

In 1685, Compton openly challenged James II's pro-Catholic policies in the House of Lords. As a consequence, he was stripped of his Privy Council membership. In 1686, he was deprived of his bishopric for refusing to dismiss John Sharp, a preacher who opposed Catholicism.

Revolution and Restoration

Compton played a pivotal role in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He was one of the seven signatories to the invitation extended to William of Orange. On April 11, 1689, Compton crowned Mary and William, and regained his influence at court.
