Childhood and Family
Irvin Kershner was born into a family of Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia. His father, a native of a town near Kyiv, had initially traveled to Argentina where he worked as a horse harness maker before relocating to the United States. His mother, born near Odessa, immigrated to Holland and subsequently to America as well. Kershner recalled that his parents met in New York. At home, the family spoke Yiddish, Ukrainian, and Polish.
Early Education and Artistic Influences
From a young age, Kershner received training in stringed instruments and later pursued painting and photography. He eventually became a photography instructor at the California School of Arts. Kershner's educational journey included Drexel Institute of Technology, Cambridge University, The Tyler School of Fine Arts, and the University of Southern California Art Center.
Film Career: From Documentaries to Star Wars
The renowned film "Alexander Nevsky" by Sergei Eisenstein sparked Kershner's interest in filmmaking. After completing film courses, he transitioned into documentary filmmaking. Starting his career at the United States Information Service, Kershner directed his first feature film in 1958.
George Lucas offered Kershner the opportunity to direct one of the Star Wars installments, and after persistent requests, Kershner helmed the fifth episode of the series, "The Empire Strikes Back." In 1983, he directed the James Bond film "Never Say Never Again," bringing Sean Connery back to the iconic role.
Acting Debut and Later Career
Kershner made his acting debut in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ" (1988). In his later years, he returned to photography and attempted to work on two film projects. His final work was the television series "SeaQuest 2032."
Legacy and Influence
Kershner's contributions to filmmaking, particularly as the director of "The Empire Strikes Back," have cemented his status as a renowned filmmaker. His work continues to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide. He also played a significant role as a mentor, teaching screenwriting at the University of Southern California.
