Early Life and Education
Irving Kolodin was born into a Jewish family in New York City. He attended the Institute of Musical Art, which later became the Juilliard School, from 1927 to 1931.
Music Criticism and Journalism
During his studies, Kolodin began working for the music department of the "New York Sun" newspaper. He later became the head of the department, serving in that role until the newspaper closed in 1950.
In 1936, he published "The Metropolitan Opera, 1883-1935," a history of the renowned opera company. An expanded and revised edition was published in 1966.
Collaboration and Authorship
Kolodin collaborated with clarinetist Benny Goodman on his autobiography, "The Kingdom of Swing," published in 1939.
He also penned several popular and authoritative guides to classical music and its recordings, establishing himself as a respected music critic and historian.
Teaching and Legacy
From 1968 to 1986, Kolodin taught at the Juilliard School. His contributions to music criticism and education have cemented his legacy as a leading figure in the field.
