Biography of Irving Stone
Irving Stone, one of the founders of the biographical novel, was born on July 14, 1903, in San Francisco, USA, into an immigrant family. His parents owned a small store but it did not bring in significant income. As a young boy, Irving had to work part-time selling newspapers, delivering vegetables, or serving as a messenger.
In 1924, after earning a bachelor's degree, he began teaching economics at the University of Southern California. In 1926, following a trip to Europe, Stone moved to New York, where he spent six to seven years writing plays. During this period, Stone wrote 18 plays, two of which were staged on Broadway but did not achieve success.
In 1934, he married Jean Factor, who became his assistant in writing novels. In total, Irving Stone wrote 25 novels about the lives of great people. Among them were fictionalized biographies of Van Gogh, Jack London, Michelangelo, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Charles Darwin, and others.
Irving Stone was a founder and member of numerous literary and scientific veteran societies. He was regularly elected as a member of the boards of trustees of several California educational institutions. He provided assistance to young writers working on biographical works. Together with his wife, they established the annual Irving and Jean Stone Literary Award, which is given for the best biographical or historical novel.
