Isaac Herzog: A Statesman's Journey
Early Life and AncestryIsaac Herzog, the current President of Israel, was born in 1960 in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is the son of former President Haim Herzog and Aura Herzog. His grandfather, Isaac Isaac Herzog, served as Chief Rabbi of Northern Ireland and later Chief Rabbi of Israel. Herzog is also a nephew of Abba Eban, a renowned diplomat and politician.
Education and Career
Herzog studied law at Tel Aviv University and Cornell University in New York. He began his political career in 1999 as Secretary to the Government under Prime Minister Ehud Barak. From 2000 to 2003, he served as Chairman of the National Drug Authority.
Entering the Knesset
Herzog was elected to the Knesset in 2003. In 2005, he was appointed to his first ministerial post. He held various ministerial portfolios throughout his tenure in the Knesset, including Minister of Social Welfare, Minister of Tourism, and Minister of Strategic and Intelligence Affairs.
Chairmanship of Labor Party
In 2013, Herzog was elected Chairman of the Labor Party. As leader of the opposition, he advocated for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
