Early Life and Legacy
Nechama Leibler: An Australian-Israeli ActivistNechama Leibler was a Belgian-born Australian-Israeli international Jewish activist. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, his family immigrated to Australia as an infant shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
As President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and Chairman of the Governing Board of the World Jewish Congress, Leibler became a prominent figure in the Australian Jewish community. He played a pivotal role in the global campaign for Soviet Jewry and facilitated Israel's diplomatic relations with India and China.
Leadership in Australian Jewry
A Dominant FigureLeibler's leadership of the Australian Jewish community extended over several decades. He assumed the presidency of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry in 1978, serving four terms until his retirement in 1995.
During his tenure, he was described as "the undoubtedly dominant Jewish lay leader in Australia over the past quarter-century" by the Encyclopedia Judaica.
Champion of Soviet Jewry
A Global AdvocateLeibler's involvement in the struggle for Soviet Jewry began in 1962 when he initiated a public campaign that made Australia the first country to raise the issue at the United Nations. He published a book on the topic, "Soviet Jewry and Human Rights," in 1965.
Despite numerous visits and arrests in the Soviet Union, Leibler maintained close ties with Jewish dissidents and refuseniks after their settlement in Israel. His tireless advocacy culminated in the opening of the first Jewish cultural center in the Soviet Union and the first Jewish song festivals in Moscow and Leningrad.
Asia-Pacific Engagements
Building BridgesAfter the liberation of Soviet Jewry, Leibler turned his attention to the Asia-Pacific region. He played a crucial role in establishing diplomatic relations between Israel and both India and China, meeting with key government officials before the respective agreements.
Involvement with the World Jewish Congress
International LeadershipLeibler held leadership positions within the World Jewish Congress (WJC), an umbrella organization representing world Jewry. He served as Chairman of the Governing Board and Senior Vice President.
Business Ventures
Entrepreneurial SpiritIn addition to his activism, Leibler was also a successful businessman. His company, Jetset Tours, was the largest tourism organization in the region. He also served as a director of one of Australia's three national television networks. In Israel, he invested in and advised several high-tech companies.
