Early Life and Education
Gabriela Firea was born on July 13, 1972, in Bacau, Romania. She was the second of four children and graduated from high school in her hometown. In 1994, she earned her degree in literature from the University of Bucharest. Firea also completed postgraduate studies in economics from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies in 2010.
Journalistic Career
Firea's career began in journalism in 1990 as a reporter for the weekly magazine Simply in Bacau. She later joined the daily newspaper Azi in Bucharest (1991-1992) and was an editor and host at Radio Contact (1992-1993). From 1993 to 1999, she worked as a reporter, producer, editor, and host for Romanian Television (TVR). Firea subsequently joined Intact Media Group in 2001, producing, editing, and hosting programs on Antena 1 and Antena 3. She also served as the general manager of the weekly magazine Săptămâna Financiară, the daily business newspaper Financiarul, and the women's magazine Felicia until their print editions closed in November 2011.
Political Career
Firea began her political journey in 2012 when she was elected as a senator for Ilfov County on behalf of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). She rose through the ranks of PSD, becoming the president of the party's Ilfov chapter in 2013 and vice president of the party in 2014. In the 2016 regional elections, Firea was elected mayor of Bucharest with 42.97% of the vote. She was re-elected to the Senate in 2020.
Government Appointment
On November 25, 2021, Firea was appointed Minister for Youth, Family, and Equal Opportunities in Nicolae Ciucă's government. She is the only woman in the cabinet.
Personal Life
Firea has been married three times. Her first husband, Razvan Firea, died in 2010. She married Florentin Pandele in 2010, and they have two sons together.
