Isobel Varley, a British woman who gained worldwide fame for her unconventional hobby, was known as the most tattooed pensioner in the world. Covering 93% of her body with tattoos, Varley enjoyed all the perks of being a pensioner at the age of 77. Born in Yorkshire, she later moved to Stevenage, Hertfordshire as a teenager. For most of her life, Varley was far from tattoos, never attempting to decorate her body as a child, teenager, or adult. It wasn't until she turned 49 that she got her first tattoo. After attending a tattoo convention at the 'Hammersmith Palais' in London in 1986, Varley became inspired to get a small bird tattoo. However, her plans soon changed, and throughout her life, she managed to adorn her body with over 200 different tattoos, spending over 500 hours in tattoo studios. Varley confessed that she developed a strong addiction to the process and the results of getting tattoos, considering them almost like a drug. Though she initially planned to limit herself to just one tattoo, her infatuation with body art grew uncontrollably. Varley covered almost her entire body with intricate designs and patterns, leaving only her face, feet, ears, and a small portion of her arms untouched. Despite her love for tattoos, Varley was aware that her fascination was far from standard and possibly impractical. She advised anyone interested in getting tattoos to carefully consider their choices and "be sure of what you want." Varley's husband, Malcolm, also had a few tattoos, but his dedication to body art was nowhere near that of his wife. He acknowledged that while many remembered Varley for her tattoos, he would never forget her infectious laughter. Malcolm recognized that Varley's passion for tattoos arose unexpectedly, and she never intended to become so deeply involved in the process. Varley's interest in body art brought her considerable popularity, and she frequently attended tattoo conventions and events. She made new friends, found like-minded individuals, and even gained admirers. The unexpected development of her fame surprised Varley, but she embraced it wholeheartedly. Her tattoos and her unique persona eventually earned her a place in the Guinness World Records. The news of Varley's death spread rapidly across the internet, prompting an overwhelming number of condolences. The Guinness World Records committee released an official statement expressing their deep sadness and condolences. Varley passed away on Monday, May 11, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Her family and close friends expressed their gratitude for the kind words and support they received. Varley had garnered considerable popularity in her lifetime, despite her unconventional appearance. Her death was a tragic loss, but those who knew her believe she will undoubtedly find her place in heaven. In 1989, Varley participated in her first tattoo competition, showcasing a tattoo on her back. It was during this event that she first learned about the concept of full-body tattoos. Her official record was confirmed in April 2009 on the Italian television show 'Lo Show dei Record.' However, Varley had previously appeared on television, including a 1999 appearance on the British show Guinness World Records. At that time, she had covered "only" 72% of her body with tattoos. Varley's love for tattoos had a slightly unhealthy aspect to it, but she managed to control herself. She firmly decided not to allow tattoo needles to touch her face, despite the extensive tattoo coverage on other parts of her body.
