The Woman Who Never Dated: Secrets of a 106-Year-Old's Longevity
Rejection of Romance as a Key to LongevityMaudline Day, a 106-year-old woman from Sheffield, England, believes her exceptional longevity can be attributed to her decision to abstain from romantic relationships. She has never been on a date and only visited a pub for the first time when she turned 90. According to Day, her "extraordinary resilience" is a result of avoiding the "stresses" that come with marriage and dating.
A Life of Independence
Born in 1912, the year the Titanic sank and the electrocardiogram was invented, Day has always cherished her independence. Until the age of 103, she lived alone in her own home, took care of herself, and cooked meals like steak and chips. Even at an advanced age, she would change her curtains herself. After a fall, she moved into a nursing home but continues to walk without a cane and engage with other residents.
A Rare Reunion
In 2017, Day reunited with a dear friend, Kit Solitt, after 70 years apart. They had lost touch during World War II when Day helped Solitt through the bombings. The emotional reunion sparked memories of their shared experiences during the war.
Other Factors Contributing to Longevity
Despite Day's unique approach to relationships, other factors may have also contributed to her longevity. She was an avid walker, covering over three miles a day between her home and work. She also enjoyed gardening and knitting.
Lessons from Other Centenarians
Other centenarians have shared their own secrets of long life. Ina Carruthers from Scotland, who turned 105 in 2015, credited gin with orange juice and a diet of wheat bran, toast, and biscuits. Susannah Mushatt Jones from the United States, who lived to the age of 116, emphasized the importance of sleep, a healthy breakfast, and moderation.
Grace Jones: A Similar Path
Like Maudline Day, Grace Jones, a British woman who lived to be almost 114, never found a romantic partner after her lover died in the war. She remained single and outlived her mother, siblings, and all her friends.
