Biography of Isra Gorga

Isra Gorga was an American female boxer of Yemeni descent. She was born on September 16, 1971, in Aden, Yemen. Her family comes from the upper society of Al-Bayda, a region in northern Yemen. At the age of three, Gorga moved to Canada with her family, where she maintained her fitness to pursue a career in boxing starting from 1994.

During her school years, Gorga excelled in sports, particularly volleyball and football, proving her natural talent and passion for boxing. She registered with the boxing world as MD040035, indicating her Middle Eastern origins. Gorga, along with Naseem Hamed, became one of the only two boxing world champions from the Arab world, both hailing from Yemen. Despite Yemen's lack of a rich sporting culture compared to countries like Egypt and Morocco, the success of these two phenomenal boxers has brought growing attention to Yemeni talent in sports.

Known for her beautiful and dynamic style, Gorga dominated her opponents in the ring. Her nickname, "Raging Beauty," perfectly captured her fighting spirit. She held multiple titles, including the IBF lightweight champion, UBA lightweight champion, IWBF junior lightweight champion, and WIBF junior lightweight champion.

Gorga made her professional debut on February 14, 1995, in Louisiana, where she lost to future world champion Deirdre Gogarty by knockout in the third round. On November 2, she earned her first victory by defeating another future world champion, Melinda Robinson, in Austin, Texas. Throughout her career, Gorga faced various opponents, including Andrea DeShong, Norma Mosley, and Bethany Payne.

Although she lost to Christy Martin in a high-profile fight, her participation in that match increased her recognition in the boxing world. Gorga's career had its ups and downs, experiencing disappointments and triumphs. She became the first Middle Eastern woman to win a world championship title by knocking out Susan Mullet in the fourth round to claim the UBA lightweight title on January 12, 2001.

Gorga went on to have successful fights against the likes of Michelle Nielsen, Jo Wyman, and Carla Witherspoon. She participated in a total of 33 professional fights, winning 28 (including 11 by knockout), losing 3, and having 2 draws. Her last victorious fight took place on March 27, 2004, against Carla Witherspoon.
