Early Life and Military Career

The Galili Family and Education

Yisrael Galili was born into a family that emigrated to Palestine in 1914, settling in Tel Aviv. He attended school and later trained as a printer.

Joining the 'Haganah'

Galili began his military career in 1927 by joining the 'Haganah', a paramilitary organization. In 1941, he was part of a three-member delegation representing the Histadrut labor union in the 'Haganah' command. As a key organizer of the underground armament, he played a vital role in acquiring weapons.

World War II and the 'Haganah'

During World War II, Galili was involved in preparing for a potential German invasion of Palestine. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the 'Haganah' in 1946, serving in that capacity until its dissolution by David Ben-Gurion in 1948, after the establishment of the State of Israel. Galili played a crucial role in the War of Independence.

Political and Public Service

Founding a Youth Movement

In addition to his military service, Galili was also a founder of the youth group 'HaNoar HaOved' ('Working Youth').

Kibbutz Life and Politics

He lived in Kibbutz Naan until his death. Galili was elected to the first Knesset and subsequent Knessets from 1949 to 1951 and from 1955 to 1977, representing the Mapam, 'Ma'arach', and Avoda parties. He held positions as Minister of Information and Minister without Portfolio in various governments.

Advising Golda Meir

Galili served as a prominent advisor to Prime Minister Golda Meir and her cabinet, attending the inner cabinet ('mitbahon') meetings where critical decisions on national security were made, including during the period leading up to the Yom Kippur War.

Knesset Committees

Galili served on the Knesset's committees on 'Foreign Affairs and Defense' and 'Education and Culture'.
